TRIUMF is Canada’s particle accelerator centre and the world’s largest cyclotron. TRIUMF’s researchers tackle some of the most challenging questions in science, from the nature of our origins in stardust to the development of novel therapies for cancer. Tour participants get first-hand experience with many of TRIUMF’s experiments and facilities as they follow the path of the proton from its origin bound in a hydrogen atom to its destination in targets and detectors. A 45-minute walk covers the majority of TRIUMF’s site and traverses two of the largest research halls. The participants will then get an introduction to current sensor-based research on single photon detectors, liquid xenon and liquid argon detectors, light-based sensors (e.g. for forest fire smoke detection), neutrino physics (e.g. nEXO), and direct dark matter searches (e.g. DEAP-3600 and DarkSide-20k).
Please note that visitors will be required to walk, climb stairs, and stand for the duration of the tour, and they will be required to read and observe site safety notices prior to arrival.
